Applicants for the grades of Member, Provisional Member, Associate and Provisional Associate must satisfy the Society that they possess the Core Body of Knowledge. This can be demonstrated by:
- having acquired an appropriate combination of recognised educational qualifications,
- having acquired practical experience in Information and Communications Technology (ICT), and
- having been actively engaged in ICT (or having obtained a recognised qualification in ICT) within the 6 months immediately prior to the date of application.
Admission to the grade of Member, Provisional Member, Associate and Provisional Associate is based on the Qualification Level, plus the period of relevant experience. The following table shows the required combinations of Qualification Level and relevant experience.

Qualification Levels
The Qualification Level for an ICT course is determined by the Membership Board: two Levels of qualifications in Information Technology are currently recognised. The minimum qualification for entry to the Associate Grade is the Australian Computer Society Examination in ICT. This examination is presented twice a year in June and November in all states of Australia and in overseas locations.
Relevant Experience
For the purpose of evaluating whether the Society's experience requirements are satisfied applicants are required to provide evidence of their experience in Information Technology, including any of the following activities:
- Coding, implementation and maintenance of computer programs;
- Systems analysis and design;
- Database design and administration;
- Network design and communication technology;
- Information systems strategic planning;
- Evaluation of information technologies;
- Systems programming;
- Hardware engineering and maintenance;
- ICT research and development;
- Standards development;
|
- Software quality assurance;
- Auditing of ICT systems;
- Design of safety critical systems;

- Pre and post sales technical support;
- Design and implementation of computer-based training material;
- training of students, staff and users of ICT;
- Supervision and management of any of the above;
- Other relevant professional activities (please specify)
|
In all cases only full-time involvement in appropriate ICT activities is considered, and written verification of the type of work will be obtained from nominated referees. The Society must be satisfied that the experience is of suitable quality as well as being in suitable job classifications.
Fifty percent of time spent in the position of trainee programmer, designer or analyst prior to completion of a recognised degree in ICT may also be considered as relevant experience.
NB Time spent on formal undergraduate courses in ICT will not count as relevant experience.
